A team is usually defined as a 'group of people working towards a common goal'. A good team is said to be one where the whole of the team is greater that the sum of its parts; and this signifies that the team members are working in collaboration with each other. Sadly, there are times when the complete opposite happens as in the 'Apollo syndrome'. Here geniuses have worked together and the output has been lesser than teams made up of less intelligent minds. So while a team does move towards a common goal, how well it achieves this goal depends solely on how well the team members work in collaboration with each other.
There are various types of teams and these are broadly classified into two groups namely, permanent teams and temporary teams. While the temporary ones are known to mushroom when the need arises, the permanent ones are created with a constant goal in mind.

Some of the temporary teams are known as a task force, a problem solving team, product design team and, of course, the committee. These teams are established to deal with important short-term objectives and projects.
The task force is a team that is normally developed to investigate a particular problem or issue. A problem solving team is on the same lines but here the team is assimilated in order to resolve particular issues rather than simply investigate, as in the case of the task force. A product design team, for example, is required to design the intricacies of new products that need to be launched. Again once the product has been designed this team can be dismantled (therefore, the team is considered temporary). In most cases, a committee is also another temporary team. The committee is developed to deal with urgent, yet temporary, issues.
Permanent teams, on the other hand, are teams like a work group, a work team and a quality circle. These teams are established to deal with the day-to-day work issues of a company and are therefore of a more lasting nature.
A work group is a team of people, hired to perform the company's objectives. They report directly to a group/team leader. A work team on the other hand has no one particular leader and is therefore often called a self managed work team. Here the group works towards common goals and pre-decide their boundaries to define straightforward and managed responsibilities. A quality circle is another permanent team where the members are from the same association and come together in order to seek work improvement opportunities.
However, irrespective of the type of team, these teams need to be managed and provided with 'incentives' to increase performance and deliverables. Adopting several team building methods will ensure maximum output from these teams. So while the description of the objective/goal will determine the type of team to be formulated to tackle it, it is the very nature of the team that will inspire the team building method that needs to be adopted.
